Here's additional information on the Flexus COBOL Java Client: THE COBOL JAVA CLIENT What is the Flexus COBOL Java Client? The COBOL Java Client is a set of libraries that allows the COBOL programmer to continue to write 100% of the business application in COBOL and utilize any Java compliant Internet Web Browser as the front-end for the COBOL application. The COBOL Java Client does NOT require the programmer to know any other language than COBOL. Industry Standard Communications The COBOL Java Client supports both Intranet and Internet access through an industry-standard TCP/IP communications session. This allows the COBOL programmer to build applications in ANSI standard COBOL and deploy them on any Internet/Intranet Web Server. Why a Java Applet and not 100% HTML/CGI? Many programmers have attempted to use a combination of CGI (Common Gateway Interface) Script and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) to build a World Wide Web user interface for their COBOL applications. While this approach will work, it is a weak solution to the problem of deploying a COBOL application on an Intranet or the Internet. A new CGI script/application must be started to process the HTML input by using a "submit" button. Field-by-field validation processing is not possible using CGI/HTML. The entire web page is refreshed when the HTML is returned to the client machine and displayed in the web browser. This provides for an extremely annoying "complete screen refresh." When using HTML, in most cases the server application goes away every time the Internet Browser is given control. With Java, the server application remains active during the transaction. HTML is a page description language which lacks MANY user interface controls. Java is more robust for application development and supports far more GUI controls. Why should you use the COBOL Java Client?
What are the advantages of using the COBOL Java Client? The COBOL Java Client Uses industry-standard TCP/IP communications protocol and Internet Web Browsers which means anyone who has an Internet Account, a Java-enabled browser, a User ID and Password for your system can access it from just about anywhere in the world. The COBOL Java Client helps you preserve your COBOL application so that you don't have to re-write your business logic to enable your COBOL program to work on the Internet. The COBOL Java Client allows you to continue to use the file handling horsepower of COBOL, not some wimpy alternative. The COBOL Java Client allows you to preserve the existing skills of your staff. Your staff can continue writing in the language that they know best...COBOL. This allows you to maintain a high level of productivity and avoid long learning curves and costly mistakes. The COBOL Java Client supports all of the standard Windows User Interface controls. REQUIREMENTS: You'll need an Java Enabled World Wide Web browser such as Netscape Communication's Netscape Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. If you have a UNIX Web Server, please contact us at info@flexus.com. PLEASE NOTE! You must have one of the compilers listed above and it must be a 32 bit Windows version of the compiler in order for the COBOL Java Client to work properly!
